The horn-like structures on a giraffe's head, called ossicones, are present at birth but lie flat, unattached to the skull, to facilitate an easier passage through the birth canal. They fuse to the skull later and grow upright.
Female giraffes give birth standing up, meaning their newborns experience a dramatic six-foot drop to the ground upon entering the world. This surprising descent helps to break the amniotic sac and encourages the calf to take its first breath.
A newborn baby has around 300 bones, while an adult has 206. Many of a baby's bones are made of cartilage and eventually fuse together as they grow, like those in the skull and spine, forming stronger, larger structures.
